The Canadian Transportation Agency (OTC) has given WestJet the green light to operate regular international code-share flights, connecting Canada with South Africa, Nigeria, and the Maldives.
According to two decisions published on February 3, the OTC confirmed that WestJet meets all applicable regulatory requirements. As a result, the airline has obtained the necessary licenses, subject to the conditions outlined in the Canadian Aviation Regulations.
Flights to South Africa and Nigeria are covered under standard air transport agreements. However, authorization for the Maldives has been granted on a temporary basis due to the absence of a current bilateral agreement between Canada and this island nation. In such cases, the OTC is permitted to issue a temporary license for international air services not provided for under a specific bilateral agreement.
The Minister of Transport has confirmed WestJet’s eligibility to operate these routes. The Agency also emphasizes that the airline complies with all required regulatory criteria.
It should be noted that the license for flights to the Maldives will expire on June 30, 2027.
