Members of Parliament in Tanzania are urging the government to accelerate the development of the East African Coast Highway, which connects Bagamoyo in Tanzania to Malindi in Kenya. The parliamentary infrastructure committee recently inspected the highway’s progress in Tanga, Pangani, and Bagamoyo, emphasizing the need to speed up construction.
According to committee chairman Selemani Kakoso, the highway will significantly boost trade between Kenya and Tanzania while enhancing the transportation of cargo and tourists. While Kenya has nearly completed its section of the highway, Tanzania has encountered delays due to financial constraints.
East African Coast Highway
Funded by the African Development Bank, the highway is expected to enhance regional connectivity once completed. It will also provide a more efficient route for tourists traveling to Saadani National Park from Arusha, Tanga, and Dar es Salaam. President Samia Suluhu Hassan launched construction in February last year, making the project a key part of the East African Coastal Transport Corridor. The highway is set to play a crucial role in strengthening both nations’ economies by facilitating trade, improving logistics, and reducing transportation costs.
Beyond trade, the highway will have a significant impact on businesses and tourism along its route. Improved road infrastructure will grant businesses better access to markets, while tourists will enjoy easier travel to major attractions. Saadani National Park, in particular, is expected to receive more visitors, boosting the hospitality and travel sectors. Additionally, enhanced transport networks will encourage investment in hotels, lodges, and other tourism-related ventures, further stimulating economic growth.
The project will also contribute to regional integration by enabling the free movement of people and goods, fostering stronger economic ties between Kenya and Tanzania. Moreover, the construction and maintenance of the highway will create employment opportunities in sectors such as logistics, tourism, and infrastructure development. Both governments view the East African Coast Highway as a transformative initiative that will promote economic prosperity and regional cooperation across East Africa.
