Opening of the Akwaba Junction Interchange: An Ambitious Project to Help Solve Traffic Congestion Issues in Southern Abidjan

Abidjan has made significant progress in improving mobility, much to the satisfaction of its residents. The Akwaba Junction Interchange, located in the Port-Bouët district, was officially inaugurated on March 19, 2025.

This project led to the construction of two major infrastructures and the development of five kilometers of roads. It includes, in particular, a 395-meter slab bridge with 2×3 lanes, as well as a second 362-meter structure designed for the Abidjan Metro, connecting Port-Bouët to the roundabout. This intersection is a crucial link between Houphouët-Boigny Boulevard, the Grand-Bassam Highway, and the expressway leading to the airport.

“This project was designed to address the congestion issues that previously affected traffic on Houphouët-Boigny Boulevard. It contributes to an overall improvement in transportation,” says Isaac Montey, an economic operator.

This infrastructure embodies the Ivorian authorities’ clear vision focused on modernizing urban facilities and also represents Côte d’Ivoire’s aspiration to build a smooth and resilient city.

In practice, the Akwaba Junction serves as a tool for economic and social development by facilitating access to port and airport areas, thereby supporting key sectors of the national economy, such as international trade and transportation.

“Akwaba stands as a true driver of growth, opportunity, and prosperity for the country, as it contributes to the expansion of commercial and industrial activities in the capital,” says sociologist Linda Meless.

The Akwaba Interchange project, with a total cost of 31.2 billion CFA francs, is transforming citizens’ lives, strengthening the city’s competitiveness, and improving the quality of life for its residents.
