“Nigeria Continues the Digitalization of Services at Its International Airports”

From e-Visas to online check-in procedures and digital scanning, Nigeria is moving forward with automating processes at its international airports—aiming to enhance the traveler experience.

Nigeria’s airport automation program plans to digitize embarkation and disembarkation cards for foreign travelers starting in May 2025. This move will eliminate the need for manual entry of passenger information, which authorities say will reduce waiting times and improve coordination among border control services.

The initiative aims to improve the performance of the country’s major airports, enhance the traveler experience, and streamline data collection. It is part of a broader strategy to digitize airport operations, which also includes the upcoming full implementation of an e-Visa service.

Another phase of the program recently saw the installation of control equipment (scanners, surveillance cameras, etc.) at key security checkpoints in both the old and new terminals of Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos.

Nigeria’s international airports—particularly Lagos’ MMIA and Abuja’s Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA)—handled an estimated 62% of the country’s flights in 2023. This highlights both the heavy demand on these platforms and the pressing need for reform.
