Mozambique to Acquire 390 Public Transport Buses, Half Powered by CNG

Mozambique has been implementing a plan to decarbonize its transport sector for several years. As part of this initiative, the government has ordered 390 buses, half of which will run on compressed natural gas (CNG).

A procurement process is currently underway for the acquisition of these 390 buses, with half of them powered by CNG. According to local media, the bidding process will remain open until March 25, 2025.

These buses, intended for urban and suburban public transport, are part of a government plan to decarbonize various sectors by 2050, particularly urban transport. Another key goal of the program is to reduce dependency on fossil fuels.

As part of this roadmap, several projects are planned, starting with a pilot phase in the Maputo metropolitan region by 2030. This phase includes the introduction of a cleaner transportation system featuring a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) network, a light rail system, and a suspended rail network.

According to the government’s strategic document for the program, nearly $80 billion will be invested by 2050. A report cited by Mozambican media states that fuel imports cost the country approximately $482 million per year, accounting for about 8% of total imports and 3% of GDP in 2020.

The transport sector alone consumes 84% of the country’s fossil fuels, making the economy vulnerable to exchange rate fluctuations and fuel price volatility.
