A Strategic Framework for 2025
The Director General of Land and Maritime Transport, Mr. Sibidi Vincent TOUGRI, described this program as a response to the pressing challenges in the sector. It specifically aims to:
- Modernize transport infrastructure;
- Digitize processes to simplify transit formalities;
- Reduce tariff barriers hindering trade within the regional space.
According to Mr. TOUGRI, these measures align with a shared ambition to boost commercial exchanges in West Africa while honoring commitments made under frameworks such as the West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU) and the Alliance of Sahel States (AES).
Reforms Needed to Strengthen Regional Integration
In his address, Mr. Edgar Sié SOU emphasized that this session was held at a time when significant reforms are required to fulfill regional and international commitments. He stressed the importance of evaluating past actions to identify persistent challenges and formulate practical recommendations for the future.
Discussions also highlighted the crucial role of collaboration among various sector stakeholders. Mr. Sié SOU urged the Committee members to integrate facilitation requirements into national and regional policies to ensure sustainable outcomes.
A Strategic Priority for Burkina Faso and the Region
Inter-state road transport and transit remain critical levers for economic development and regional integration. By addressing challenges related to infrastructure, regulation, and tariff barriers, Burkina Faso aims to strengthen the competitiveness of its economy and that of its regional partners.
The National Committee for the Facilitation of Inter-State Road Transport and Transit, established to promote the free movement of people and goods, stands out as a key player in implementing the necessary reforms.
Promising Prospects
Convinced that the recommendations from this session will help overcome the sector’s challenges, Mr. Edgar Sié SOU reaffirmed MATM’s commitment to supporting all initiatives aimed at improving the facilitation of road transport and transit.
With the adoption of the 2025 program, Burkina Faso reasserts its ambition to become a key player in transforming infrastructure and trade in West Africa.
This program marks a decisive step towards stronger regional integration, positioning Burkina Faso at the forefront of Africa’s transport economy dynamics.
