A major turning point for urban mobility in Addis Ababa took place today with the launch of a fleet of 100 fully electric buses. This initiative, led by the city’s mayor, Adanech Abiebie, demonstrates a strengthened commitment from the municipal administration to the well-being of its citizens.
This new fleet of electric buses aims primarily to address the transportation challenges faced by the residents of Addis Ababa. These modern vehicles are designed to be environmentally friendly, offering significant passenger capacity. Additionally, operating these buses on dedicated lanes should optimize service speed and reduce fuel-related expenses, according to the information provided.
During the inaugural ceremony, Mayor Adanech Abiebie emphasized that the acquisition and deployment of these electric buses represent a direct response to public transportation difficulties. She also highlighted the significant contribution of this initiative to national efforts to combat climate change and reduce fossil fuel consumption. The mayor insisted that the introduction of these buses illustrates the municipal administration’s determination to facilitate the movement of the population.
The Minister of Transport and Logistics, Alemu Sime, expressed his strong support for this initiative, considering it an important step toward the development of more environmentally friendly transportation, in line with government objectives. He also commended the Addis Ababa administration for its efforts to improve the quality of life in the city, particularly through improvements in the transportation sector, encouraging other municipalities to follow this example.
According to Yabebal Addis, head of the transportation bureau of the Addis Ababa city administration, more than 1,170 public transport buses already provide daily service to residents. It was also announced that, to mark their entry into service, the electric buses will offer free rides to residents on all city routes for today.
