Chad: World Bank Invests $170 Million to Boost Connectivity and Regional Integration

A Giant Leap for Transportation and Trade in the Lake Chad Region

The World Bank recently announced $170 million in funding from the International Development Association (IDA) to support Chad in improving its multimodal connectivity and logistics. This initiative aims to strengthen trade value chains in the crucial Lake Chad region.

Improvement of Road and Logistics Infrastructure

The flagship project, titled “Chad Connectivity and Integration Project,” focuses on several areas:

  • Paving of the Trans-Saharan Highway: 55 km of the Liwa-Rig Rig section will be paved, a vital axis for cross-border trade.
  • Feeder Roads: 12 km of roads connecting Bol to the Trans-Saharan Highway will be built.
  • Rural Roads: Approximately 50 km of rural roads will be improved to facilitate access to local markets.
  • Logistics Facilities: Construction of energy-efficient warehouses and markets, powered by solar energy, in Bol, Bagasola, and other locations.

Socio-Economic Impact and Inclusion

This ambitious project is not limited to infrastructure. It also aims to:

  • Stimulate sub-regional trade, with a focus on women’s inclusion.
  • Strengthen the capacities of traders, producers, and transport associations, particularly in the fisheries and spirulina value chains.
  • Improve access to essential services (markets, schools, health) for isolated populations.

Crucial Support for the Lake Chad Region

The Lake Chad region, facing major socio-economic challenges, will greatly benefit from this project. As Clara de Sousa, World Bank Country Director for Chad, pointed out, this project will support the stabilization of the region and foster economic opportunities.

Project Beneficiaries and Scope

Approximately 3.8 million people, including refugees and internally displaced persons, will benefit from this project. It will help integrate local producers into the regional value chain.

This World Bank investment represents a turning point for connectivity and economic development in Chad and the Lake Chad region. By improving transport infrastructure and supporting trade, this project opens up new opportunities for millions of people.
