Congo Terminal Handles 1.2 Million TEUs, Strengthening Its Position as a Regional Hub
Republic of the Congo | Maritime Transport & Logistics
Congo Terminal is consolidating its position as a major maritime logistics hub in Central Africa after handling 1.2 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) as of October 1, 2026. The performance represents an increase of approximately 11% compared with the same period in 2025 and puts the operator on track to reach its target of 1.3 million TEUs by the end of the year.
The growth reflects rising port activity, stronger maritime connectivity and the continued mobilisation of the terminal’s workforce to accommodate increasing cargo volumes.
Three New Shipping Services Boost Connectivity
The launch of three regular shipping services in 2026 has strengthened Congo Terminal’s links with international maritime networks.
These include Maersk’s W7A service, generating approximately 1,000 container moves per port call; CMA CGM’s EURAF 5 service, handling up to 450 moves per call; and MSC’s IAS service, which can reach up to 1,250 moves per call.
The terminal also reports an average handling rate of 27 container moves per hour for vessels with a capacity of 15,000 TEUs. This operational performance supports Pointe-Noire’s ability to accommodate large container ships and handle growing cargo flows.
According to Anthony Samzun, Managing Director of Congo Terminal, the results reflect a strategy built around maritime connectivity, operational productivity and sustained investment.
East Mole Project Set to Expand Terminal Capacity
To support future growth, Congo Terminal is preparing to expand its infrastructure through the East Mole project.
The development includes a 750-metre, fully electric quay scheduled to enter service in 2027. Once operational, the new infrastructure is expected to double the terminal’s capacity, enabling it to accommodate additional traffic and strengthen its position in regional logistics.
The project forms part of broader efforts to improve port performance, facilitate trade and reinforce the competitiveness of the Congolese transport corridor.
Emmanuel Addo, Operations Director at Congo Terminal, highlighted the contribution of employees to the company’s results and stressed the importance of maintaining operational performance to achieve the 1.3 million TEU target by the end of 2026.
Pointe-Noire, a Strategic Gateway for Central Africa
Congo Terminal plays a central role in the Republic of the Congo’s foreign trade. As the exclusive operator of container handling at the Autonomous Port of Pointe-Noire, the company handles the country’s containerised traffic.
The port also serves as a regional transshipment platform, with cargo redistributed to neighbouring markets, including the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Cameroon, Angola and Gabon. This network reinforces Pointe-Noire’s role in regional and international supply chains.
Congo Terminal is a subsidiary of Africa Global Logistics (AGL) and operates under a public-private partnership. Its activities cover the handling of container ships and roll-on/roll-off vessels.
The company employs nearly 900 Congolese staff and holds several certifications, including ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015, the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) certification, Pedestrian Free Yard and Green Terminal. It also supports initiatives focused on youth development, environmental protection and education.
Aiming for Further Growth in 2026 and Beyond
With 1.2 million TEUs handled by October 1 and a year-end target of 1.3 million TEUs, Congo Terminal is continuing to expand its operational capabilities.
The planned East Mole development is expected to provide additional capacity and support the growth of maritime trade in Central Africa. Together, rising cargo volumes, new shipping services and infrastructure investment are strengthening Pointe-Noire’s role as a regional logistics hub.
