Nigeria: BAECC Strengthens Operations Leadership on the Benin–Asaba Expressway
Benin-Asaba Expressway Concession Company Limited (BAECC) has appointed Emmanuel Onwodi as Chief Operating Officer (COO). The appointment comes as work on the Benin–Asaba Expressway is expected to accelerate ahead of the dry season.
Appointment comes as construction enters an acceleration phase
BAECC has appointed Emmanuel Onwodi to oversee operations related to the concession of the Benin–Asaba Expressway. His responsibilities include coordinating project execution and monitoring the various stakeholders involved in the concession.
Onwodi has experience in infrastructure financing, public-private partnerships (PPPs), concessions and transport projects. He previously held senior positions at the Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission (ICRC), the Nigerian agency responsible for overseeing infrastructure concession projects.
His professional background covers several transport sectors, including roads, rail, ports and aviation.
Benin–Asaba Expressway: a key road link under pressure
The Benin–Asaba Expressway connects Edo State with Delta State in southern Nigeria. The route carries both passenger and freight traffic, including heavy trucks and articulated vehicles.
The concession project covers the rehabilitation, reconstruction and operation of the road. Planned works include pavement reconstruction, drainage systems, culverts and the installation of the different road pavement layers.
For transport operators, the main issue is the reliability of travel times and the reduction of disruptions along the route. Poor road conditions can lead to slower journeys, higher fuel consumption and additional operating costs for trucking companies.
Weather conditions affect the construction schedule
BAECC has indicated that heavy rainfall has affected some earthworks, soil-stabilisation activities and pavement construction.
The concessionaire therefore plans to increase its deployment of equipment and personnel from October, when weather conditions are expected to be more favourable for road construction.
This phase should allow BAECC to concentrate additional resources on the various work sites and increase the pace of construction.
