After Nissan, Volkswagen and Toyota, it is the turn of the South Korean car manufacturer, KIA Motors, to launch a car assembly plant in Ghana. The launching ceremony of this unit, which took place on Tuesday, May 2, was attended by the President of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo, and the Ghanaian Minister of Trade and Industry, Micahel Okyere Baafi.
Built in the town of Amasaman, located 20km north of the capital Accra, the plant occupies an area of 65,000 m2, of which 16,000 meters are devoted solely to the assembly plant. The local company Rana Motors, official importer of Kia since 1986, announced in a press release that the plant “will be able to produce 180 units of vehicles each day to reach 35,000 vehicles each year with a three-shift work system.”
It “will produce the vehicles using a method that consists of completing the assembly of already partially assembled automotive parts, or Semi Knocked Down (SKD), while Kia will provide the spare parts as well as the technology support needed for the assembly.” the statement said
The second plant of Kia Motors launched after the one in Nigeria, will produce models K5, Cerato, Seltos, in addition to SUVs, trucks and minibuses.
