Ethiopia to boost trade efficiency with national e-commerce system

The government of Ethiopia has announced plans to roll out a nationwide e-commerce platform as part of a broader initiative to reform Ethiopia’s trade

The government of Ethiopia has announced plans to roll out a nationwide e-commerce platform as part of a broader initiative to reform Ethiopia’s trade system and deepen regional economic integration.

The Ministry of Trade and Regional Integration (MoTRI) revealed the plans and said the upcoming digital trade platform is designed to tackle inefficiencies in the country’s market value chain. Trade Minister Kassahun Gofe (PhD), highlighted that the system will play a key role in increasing the international competitiveness of Ethiopian goods and services.

Benefits

“The introduction of an e-commerce platform represents a crucial move towards removing logistical and procedural obstacles in trade. It supports our long-term vision of creating an efficient and digitally driven trading environment,” the minister explained.

He also reported that Ethiopia has generated over USD 5 billion in export earnings within the past nine months, which accounts for more than 70% of the government’s annual export revenue target of USD 7 billion. Kassahun stressed that the administration remains dedicated to fostering a fair, open, and globally aligned trade environment. Efforts are underway to update trade policies and frameworks to meet international benchmarks.

In addition, Kassahun revealed that recent enforcement activities targeting unlawful trade practices led to action being taken against 250,000 individuals found operating outside the legal trade system. These pre-inspection operations, he said, are part of a broader strategy to support lawful business operations and maintain a level playing field in the market.

The digital commerce platform, once operational, is expected to significantly advance Ethiopia’s trade capabilities, offering new opportunities for exporters and reinforcing the country’s involvement in the digital global economy.
