Nairobi, Kenya | 18 December 2024 – In a landmark partnership set to revolutionize East African infrastructure, Everstrong Capital and Lotz To Develop have joined forces to deliver the transformative Usahihi Nairobi to Mombasa Expressway. This partnership combines the financial acumen of Everstrong Capital with the engineering and development expertise of Lotz To Develop, led by John Lotz, a trailblazer in Public-Private Partnership (PPP) toll road concessions. With a unique blend of technical and financial expertise, John Lotz has overseen over 20 major infrastructure projects across Africa, bringing an unmatched depth of knowledge to the expressway development.
“The Usahihi Expressway isn’t just a road; it’s a catalyst for economic empowerment, environmental stewardship, and technological progress,” said John Lotz, founder of Lotz To Develop. “Our collaboration with Everstrong Capital ensures we’re not only building infrastructure but also nurturing opportunities for local entrepreneurs and creating a legacy of sustainable growth.
Private toll roads provide a major challenge to the development team. The objective is to balance the most appropriately designed modern infrastructure to meet the demand of the future traffic, with the lowest toll tariff, yet optimizing the revenue generated, such that it is attractive to private investors and funders of the project.”
The 440-kilometer Usahihi Expressway is designed with environmental responsibility at its core, reflecting the focus of Lotz To Develop on sustainable infrastructure. This transformative project integrates solar-powered EV infrastructure to support electric vehicles, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and addressing the high fuel costs that account for 30-40% of logistics expenses.
For the first time in Kenya, the expressway will traverse a national park, with innovative animal crossings and migration corridors developed in collaboration with wildlife researchers to minimize disruption to ecosystems. Unlike traditional approaches that avoid national parks, this project embraces coexistence, balancing development with conservation. With support from environmental scientists and hydrology
experts, the expressway will also address noise and water pollution concerns, setting a new precedent in the Region for future infrastructure projects.
The project will also feature tree-lined corridors, contributing to carbon offset and improving air quality. By fostering opportunities for local entrepreneurs, it ensures that communities along its route directly benefit from the development.
Connecting Kenya’s capital to its largest port, the Usahihi Expressway will reduce travel time, streamline logistics, and enhance safety. Furthermore, it will serve as a vital trade artery for neighboring nations like Uganda, Rwanda, and Tanzania, positioning East Africa as a dynamic economic hub. This commitment to innovative, sustainable development is at the heart of Lotz To Develop’s mission, and it is a key focus of their partnership with Everstrong Capital to bring this vision to life.
