Trade between China’s Hunan Province and Kenya reached a record high in the first quarter of 2025, totaling 420 million yuan (approximately 57.6 million U.S. dollars), a 79% year-on-year increase, according to customs authorities in Changsha.
Exports of electromechanical products and labor-intensive goods from Hunan to Kenya amounted to 180 million and 190 million yuan respectively, marking increases of 98% and 200.7%. These two categories together accounted for nearly 90% of Hunan’s total exports to the East African nation.
Exports of high value-added products — including lithium batteries, photovoltaic equipment, and electric vehicles — reached 3.33 million yuan, up 159.3%. Meanwhile, exports of construction machinery, such as cranes and excavators, soared by 232.5% to 28.05 million yuan.
On the import side, Hunan imported 5.4 million yuan worth of Kenyan goods, mainly agricultural products, including seafood and sea cucumbers.
Kenya has now become Hunan’s sixth-largest trading partner in Africa.
Last Thursday, Nairobi hosted a promotional event for the 4th China-Africa Economic and Trade Expo, focusing on boosting bilateral economic ties, and gathering around 100 representatives from Kenyan companies.
