The Ministry of Infrastructure and Land and Air Transport, Malick NDIAYE, has announced the upcoming organization of general states of transport in Senegal. This initiative, scheduled for the end of July 2024, aims to lay the groundwork for a profound and lasting transformation of the transport sector in the country.
The announcement was made on Tuesday, May 7, 2024, during an initial meeting between the new minister and representatives of road transport unions.
Objectives of the General States
These meetings aim to determine, based on sector challenges, concerted measures to ensure sustainable governance of the transport ecosystem. The transport sector is essential for Africa’s economic and social development, and adopting modern and efficient approaches is crucial.
Under the instruction of the President of the Republic, Mr. Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar FAYE, these general states are planned before the end of July. They aim to achieve a rapid and comprehensive transformation of public transport in Senegal. This ambitious vision aligns with a perspective of sustainable development and improved transport services for citizens.
Key Role of Stakeholders
Addressing union members, Minister Malick NDIAYE emphasized the government’s desire to make these general states “an important moment for reflection, consultation, exchange, and sharing on the necessary directions to build a modern, safe, profitable, and clean transport system.” Sector actors have a crucial role to play in finding relevant solutions for the future of public transportation.
The Minister also highlighted “the significant role of stakeholders in seeking relevant solutions for the future of public transport.” He stressed the imperative to organize the sector, which, in his view, should be more professional, modern, and efficient. The creation of the National Council for Land Transport (CNTT) is one of the measures envisaged to achieve this objective.
These general states represent a major lever for realizing the vision of His Excellency the President of the Republic regarding transportation. Senegal has the opportunity to rethink and transform its transport system for the benefit of all its citizens
