Qatar Airways expands its foothold in Africa with the acquisition of 25% of Airlink

Qatar Airways has announced a new milestone in its growth strategy in Africa with the acquisition of a 25% stake in the South African regional airline Airlink. This announced strategic partnership marks a significant step for both carriers and opens new perspectives for the African aviation market.

Our investment in Airlink once again illustrates how we consider Africa as a key element of our future. This partnership not only demonstrates our confidence in Airlink, a resilient, agile, financially sound company governed by rigorous principles, but also in Africa as a whole. This continent presents immense potential that I am delighted to be able to help realize,” stated the Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive Officer, Engr. Badr Mohammed Al-Meer.

By taking a significant share in Airlink, Qatar Airways considerably expands its network of destinations in Southern and Eastern Africa. Airlink, which serves more than 45 destinations in 15 African countries, brings Qatar Airways local expertise and access to key markets. This alliance will allow passengers of both airlines to benefit from an extended network of connections, thus facilitating business and leisure travel on the African continent.

Speaking about the agreement, Airlink’s Chief Executive Officer, Rodger Foster, stated, “Qatar Airways’ entry into our company’s capital is a strong signal in favor of Airlink. This operation will unlock growth prospects by achieving economies of scale, increasing our capacity, and broadening our marketing scope.

This agreement presents itself as a win-win partnership for both companies. For Qatar Airways, it’s an opportunity to consolidate its position in Africa, a rapidly growing market. By partnering with Airlink, the Qatari company will be able to leverage Airlink’s expertise in regional operations and strengthen its presence on the continent.

For Airlink, this alliance represents a significant growth opportunity. With Qatar Airways’ support, the South African company will be able to benefit from additional investments, better international visibility, and access to new technologies.

What are the future prospects?

This acquisition is part of a broader strategy by Qatar Airways aimed at strengthening its presence in emerging markets. The Qatari company has already announced other investments in Africa, notably in RwandAir.

The alliance between Qatar Airways and Airlink is expected to stimulate competition and promote a decrease in airfare prices, benefiting African consumers. It could also contribute to improving connectivity between different regions of the continent and strengthening African economic integration.

Qatar Airways’ acquisition of Airlink is excellent news for the African aviation sector. This strategic partnership opens new development perspectives for both companies and should contribute to strengthening Africa’s position as a leading tourist and economic destination.
