Ghana launches Tema Integrated Industrial Park to connect manufacturing with Tema Port and boost AfCFTA trade

Ghana has officially launched construction of the 83.5-hectare Tema Integrated Industrial Park (TIIP), a new industrial hub located near Tema Port. The project is expected to expand manufacturing capacity, support value-added production and reinforce Ghana’s position in regional supply chains under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
Ghana breaks ground on Tema Integrated Industrial Park
The Government of Ghana, led by President John Dramani Mahama, has launched the Tema Integrated Industrial Park (TIIP) with a groundbreaking ceremony held in Tema. The project brings together Afreximbank, TDC Ghana Limited, Ghana Integrated Aluminium Development Corporation, and ARISE Integrated Industrial Platforms> as key partners.
Covering 83.5 hectares and strategically positioned close to Tema Port, the industrial park is designed to support Ghana’s proposed 24-hour economy by bringing manufacturing, logistics and export activities closer to one of West Africa’s busiest maritime gateways.
The initiative forms part of Ghana’s broader industrialisation strategy aimed at increasing local value addition, strengthening export-oriented manufacturing and improving the country’s competitiveness in African markets.
Industrial clusters linked to logistics infrastructure
The Tema Integrated Industrial Park will host industries focused on:
- agro-processing;
- garments and textiles;
- packaging industries;
- integrated aluminium value chains.
Its proximity to Tema Port is expected to reduce transport costs, shorten export lead times and facilitate access to regional and international markets. By clustering manufacturers within a dedicated industrial zone connected to port infrastructure, Ghana aims to improve supply chain efficiency while attracting new domestic and foreign investment.
The project also supports efforts to process more raw materials locally rather than exporting them in unprocessed form, creating additional industrial capacity and higher-value exports.
Afreximbank reinforces support for industrial development
Representing Afreximbank, Kwabena Ayirebi, Managing Director, Banking Operations, delivered remarks on behalf of the Bank’s President and Chairman of the Board, George Elombi.
He reaffirmed the Bank’s commitment to financing industrial parks and special economic zones as key drivers of industrialisation, trade expansion and economic transformation across Africa.
He also highlighted Afreximbank’s long-standing partnership with ARISE IIP and reiterated the institution’s continued support for Ghana’s industrial development agenda.
Afreximbank was also represented by Oluranti Doherty, Managing Director for Export Development, and Vitalis Ekene Uzor, Director of the Group Management Office.
Why it matters
- New manufacturing capacity close to Tema Port will improve production and export logistics.
- Higher local value addition is expected in agro-processing, textiles and aluminium industries.
- Stronger regional trade integration will support Ghana’s participation in AfCFTA value chains.
Regional perspective
Industrial parks near strategic ports are becoming a central feature of Africa’s industrial development strategy. Similar projects in countries such as Benin, Côte d’Ivoire, Gabon and Togo seek to combine manufacturing, logistics and customs services within integrated industrial ecosystems. These developments are expected to strengthen regional supply chains and increase intra-African trade under the AfCFTA.
The launch of the Tema Integrated Industrial Park marks another step in Ghana’s efforts to expand industrial production and improve export competitiveness. By linking manufacturing directly to Tema Port, the project is expected to enhance supply chain performance, attract investment and support the country’s long-term industrial transformation.
