Ivory Coast: Traffic Growth at the Port of Abidjan Surpasses 40 Million Tons in 2024

This exceptional result consolidates the port’s position as a major player in trade, both in Côte d’Ivoire and across the West African region.

Sustained Growth and Strategic Investments
The port’s activity surged from 34.7 million tons in 2023 to over 40 million in 2024. Container traffic was the main driver of this growth, recording a 33% increase to reach nearly 1.65 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units).

This performance is the result of steady progress since 2010, when traffic volume stood at 22 million tons.

To support this expansion, massive investments amounting to 1,100 billion CFA francs have been carried out since 2012. These large-scale projects included the widening of the Vridi Canal, the commissioning of a second container terminal, the construction of a roll-on/roll-off terminal, the modernization of the fishing port, and the development of new industrial zones. These initiatives aim to strengthen the port’s competitiveness and logistical capacity.

A Central Role in the National and Regional Economy
Since its creation in 1951, the Port of Abidjan has been at the heart of Côte d’Ivoire’s economy. It manages more than 75% of the country’s external trade volume and contributes nearly 79% of customs revenues.

Beyond serving as a vital artery for Côte d’Ivoire’s trade, the port has established itself as a regional hub, facilitating transit and transshipment flows for neighboring countries while also supporting fishing activities and local industries.
