Canada–Côte d’Ivoire Air Agreement: Abidjan Strengthens Its West African Hub Positioning and Bolsters Transatlantic Corridor

Canada and Côte d’Ivoire have reached a decisive milestone in their aviation partnership by modernizing their bilateral air transport agreement. This strategic revision significantly increases flight frequencies and grants fifth-freedom rights for cargo operations, supporting the expansion of transatlantic trade while consolidating the regional hub status of Abidjan’s Félix Houphouët-Boigny International Airport.
Expansion of Passenger Capacity and Support for Trade Flows
The revised agreement between Ottawa and Abidjan establishes a significantly more flexible regulatory framework for carriers of both nations. The updated pact grants expanded access to all points within Canadian and Ivorian territories while capping mixed passenger-cargo operations at 14 weekly frequencies for each country.
This increase in traffic rights directly aligns with growing bilateral trade, which reached 1.2 billion Canadian dollars in 2025, alongside a 32% increase in Canadian exports to Côte d’Ivoire over the past 12 months. For designated airlines, this framework provides the predictability needed to establish or expand direct connections, serving consistent demand across business, diaspora, and institutional travel segments.
