The Kenyan cargo airline, Astral Aviation, based in Nairobi, has recently launched a major new cargo route connecting Haikou (China) to Johannesburg (South Africa). This strategic initiative strengthens the airline’s role as a key logistics bridge between Asia and the African continent.
The inaugural flight, operated by a Boeing 767-300 Freighter, marks a significant milestone in Astral Aviation’s expansion into the Asian market. The company aims to meet the growing demand for goods transport between the two continents. This new route will facilitate the shipment of various products, including electronics, pharmaceuticals, textiles, perishable goods, and parcels linked to e-commerce.
This launch aligns with Astral Aviation’s ongoing strategy to enhance Sino-African connectivity. In 2024, the airline had already integrated China into its network through the Guangzhou–Nairobi–Maputo route, announcing its intention to expand services to other key markets in Asia and Africa.
Currently, Astral Aviation’s fleet consists of three aircraft (two Boeing 767s and one Boeing 737-400). Looking ahead, the airline plans to modernize its fleet by adding a Boeing 737-800F and two converted Boeing 777 freighters once the required certifications are obtained. By adopting more modern and efficient aircraft, Astral Aviation aims to enhance its competitiveness and reduce operating costs, following the gradual retirement of older models such as the Boeing 727 and McDonnell Douglas DC9.
The establishment of this new logistics corridor between South Africa and China supports increased bilateral trade and reinforces Kenya’s position as a strategic aviation hub on the continent.
