Côte d’Ivoire – Road Infrastructure: The South Comoé Road Network Is Being Modernized

According to the government’s progress report, the length of paved roads increased from 6,514 km in 2011 to more than 8,500 km in 2024.

In the South Comoé region, road infrastructure is transforming daily life for local communities and strengthening local economic momentum.

In Tiapoum, the paving of the Tiapoum–Allangouanou corridor represents a major breakthrough. Stretching over 33.5 km, this road now makes it possible to travel from Aboisso to Tiapoum in less than 30 minutes.

“When I used to transport five to six tonnes of palm kernels, my vehicle constantly suffered punctures because of the poor condition of the road. Today, our tires and rims can last up to two years,” says Saliou Dicko, a farmer.

Further north in the region, the Maféré–Affiénou corridor—once muddy and barely passable—underwent paving works launched in December 2022. Two years later, this 14-km road, featuring two lanes and drainage structures, now offers much smoother and more comfortable travel.

“During the rainy season, travelling here was a real ordeal. In the dry season, the dust also made us sick,” recalls Jean-Baptiste Kassi, a student living in Maféré.

Finally, at the Ivorian–Ghanaian border, the new bridge over the Tanoé River is strengthening regional integration. Measuring 138 meters in length and equipped with 2×2 lanes, it connects Noé to Elubo and now ensures smoother journeys between Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana.

For Zana Diomandé, a coach driver on the Abidjan–Accra route, the bridge has turned long hours of travel into a comfortable journey. “Fewer hassles—we now travel without fatigue,” he says.

According to the government’s progress report, the length of paved roads rose from 6,514 km in 2011 to more than 8,500 km in 2024, while the number of bridges and interchanges increased from 327 to 769 over the same period. These figures highlight the government’s sustained efforts to modernize the national road network.
