STRENGTHENING THE PROFESSIONALS WHO MAKE HEALTH SYSTEMS FUNCTION

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the human resource crisis in health supply chain management in low-income countries is more serious than ever. The pandemic exposed gaps in health systems. With eight years remaining to achieve the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) target of universal health coverage, a greater emphasis must be given to the health workforce, including those who manage the health supply chain, according to SAPICS, The Professional Body for Supply Chain Management in Southern Africa.

In line with its mission is to elevate, educate and empower supply chain professionals working in all spheres across Africa – including healthcare – SAPICS will co-host the upcoming People that Deliver Global Indaba alongside the International Association of Public Health Logisticians (IAPHL), Management Sciences for Health (MSH) and Pharmaceutical Systems Africa – and with the support of the Global Fund. This important event takes place on 12 and 13 October 2022 in Lusaka, Zambia.

SAPICS is a member of the People that Deliver coalition, which is a global partnership that aims to improve health outcomes by promoting sustainable workforce excellence in health supply chain management. The Global Indaba is a forum where ideas and views on human resources for health supply chain management will be exchanged. The 2022 event will centre on the theme: “Human resources (HR) for supply chain management (SCM): The missing link to maximising supply chain performance”.

The Global Indaba offers the African and international supply chain community a platform to present and share the experiences and knowledge built up in recent years. The programme will be organised along strands of the People that Deliver Theory of Change, which encompasses staffing, skills, working conditions and motivation, the conditions needed to ensure that workers at every level of the supply chain are performing optimally. Through plenary sessions, panel discussions, presentations and workshops, the Global Indaba will showcase international and country-based applications of labour-market approaches. In addition, Monday 10 and Tuesday 11 October will be reserved for workshops.

According to People that Deliver executive manager, Dominique Zwinkels, “All in all the Indaba will be an excellent opportunity to boost our advocacy of the health supply chain workforce. The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed gaps in our health system. We now have a great opportunity to strengthen those professionals who make it function.”

More than 200 delegates are expected from government institutions, public and private sector health supply chain organisations, donor and multilateral organisations, professional associations, academic institutions, country registration bodies and non-governmental organisations.
