“The Professional Freight Forwarders Association of Mauritius calls for innovation in the freight and logistics sectors.”

The Junior Minister of Finance, Mr Dhaneshwar Damry, chaired a pre-budget consultative meeting, today in Port Louis, with representatives of the Association Professionnelle des Transitaires de l’Ile Maurice (APT).

In a statement following the meeting the representative of APT, Mr Amil Emamdin, said that the discussions with the Junior Minister of Finance were very constructive and focused on freight and logistics as well as how innovation and technologies such as Artificial Intelligence and blockchain could help modernise ports, airports, and existing systems. He stressed the need for change driven by innovation, and the importance of tapping into emerging markets, particularly in East Africa and beyond.

According to him Mauritius should be inspired by countries like Singapore, Estonia, and India, with regard to modernising their logistics networks through innovation. The freight and logistics sector must go beyond creating employment and generating activity; it should aim to boost its efficiency and contribute more significantly to the national Gross Domestic Product, he said while adding that this would help turn the sector into a key revenue generator for the country.

The APT representative also noted that Junior Minister Damry responded positively to the proposals and stressed the importance of staying connected with successful international models from India, Dubai, Singapore, South Korea, and others.
