In its commitment to improving the business environment and enhancing the competitiveness of the private sector, Togo officially launched the Trade Barrier Alert Mechanism (MAOC) on February 19, 2025. This innovative digital tool enables the identification and reporting of trade barriers, receiving alerts, and fostering better collaboration between the public and private sectors.
An Initiative for a More Fluid Economy
The launch ceremony, held in Lomé, brought together several influential figures, including representatives from the Ministry of Commerce, the Togolese Chamber of Commerce and Industry, German cooperation, the International Trade Centre (ITC), and tax and customs officials. This event marks the Togolese government’s strong commitment under the leadership of President Faure Essosimna Gnassingbé to a dynamic and prosperous private sector.
The MAOC aims to simplify administrative procedures, optimize taxation, and facilitate access to regional and international markets. Improved trade fluidity fosters innovation, stimulates investments, and generates sustainable economic opportunities.
A Strategic Tool for Economic Operators
The MAOC is designed as an interactive platform allowing entrepreneurs to report trade barriers in real time and receive tailored support for their swift resolution. This tool is part of the AMI Commerce Togo project, implemented by the Ministry of Commerce with technical support from the ITC and financial backing from the GIZ.
The AMI Commerce Togo project has several key objectives:
- Identify and reduce non-tariff barriers hindering trade;
- Strengthen the MAOC to accelerate the resolution of issues reported by the private sector;
- Improve procedural transparency through Togo’s Trade Facilitation Portal (PFE) and administrative simplification.
Strengthened Public-Private Cooperation
The MAOC is more than just an online platform; it is an institutional mechanism facilitating interaction between businesses and relevant authorities. It allows for the reporting of trade barriers encountered during import and export operations and provides timely solutions.
Originally initiated in 2018, the MAOC aligns with Togo’s economic development strategy. It supports Axis 2 of the 2020-2025 governmental roadmap, which aims to boost job creation and leverage the country’s economic potential.
With this initiative, Togo reaffirms its commitment to fostering a transparent and dynamic trade environment, conducive to economic growth and the prosperity of Togolese businesses.
