SENEGAL: 90% OF ROAD ACCIDENTS CAUSED BY HUMAN FACTORS, ACCORDING TO TRANSPORT MINISTER

(Logis-T Africa) – Speeding, overloading, and vehicle condition are among the main causes of road accidents in Senegal, warned the newly appointed Minister of Infrastructure and Land and Air Transport, Malick Ndiaye. According to him, these human factors are responsible for 90% of the accidents that occur on Senegalese roads.

The minister’s remarks follow a road accident that occurred last Thursday in Yamong, in the Koungheul department, which claimed the lives of 14 people and injured around forty others. This tragedy once again illustrates the dramatic consequences of irresponsible behavior on the roads.

Malick Ndiaye calls for a change in behavior

In response to this deplorable situation, Minister Ndiaye called for a radical change in the behavior of road users. He particularly denounced the common practice of overloading buses, both in terms of goods and passengers, as well as the often deficient condition of public transport vehicles. “We cannot continue to kill Senegalese people like flies, simply because we are in the frantic pursuit of easy gain. We cannot afford to overload buses with goods and passengers,” he emphasized.

As a reminder, according to the National Road Safety Agency (Anaser), about 700 people die each year in road accidents in Senegal. Additionally, the cost of road accidents to the Senegalese economy is estimated at several billion CFA francs each year.
