Qatar and Algeria Sign a Cooperation Agreement in the Transport Sector
Algeria and Qatar have maintained economic and diplomatic relations for over a decade. In 2023, their trade exchanges reached $81.2 million.
On Tuesday, April 8, 2025, Algeria and Qatar signed an agreement aimed at strengthening cooperation in air transport services, according to a statement from the Algerian Ministry of Transport.
The agreement allows designated airlines from both countries to operate an unlimited number of passenger and cargo flights. This partnership is expected to “strengthen economic ties and boost tourism,” the statement said.
The agreement was signed during the working visit of Algeria’s Minister of Transport, Mr. Saïd Sayoud, to Qatar. He met with his Qatari counterpart, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdullah bin Mohammed Al Thani, to discuss expanding cooperation as part of a broader strategy to deepen bilateral relations.
This agreement comes at a time when Algeria’s transport sector is undergoing a major transformation, supported by significant investments. In 2025, a budget of 7.83 billion dinars ($58.7 million) has been allocated to modernizing infrastructure, including updates to master plans for rail, port, and airport transport. The country also plans to modernize Air Algérie’s fleet, including the acquisition of Airbus A330s and the creation of a new subsidiary focused on domestic transport.
Diplomatic ties between Algeria and Qatar have significantly strengthened over the past 12 years, particularly through cooperation agreements in various sectors such as oil, gas, petrochemicals, maritime transport, and steelmaking. One notable example of this cooperation is the construction of the Bellara steel complex in Jijel.
In 2023, trade between the two nations reached $81.2 million, up from $59.5 million in 2022, according to the International Trade Center.
