Morocco and Spain Agree to Accelerate Implementation of Transport and Logistics MoU

On Monday, March 4th, during a meeting in Rabat, Morocco and Spain expressed their commitment to fast-track the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in February 2023 during the 12th session of the Morocco-Spain High-Level Meeting. The MoU aims to strengthen cooperation in the fields of transport and logistics.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Transport and Logistics, the meeting between Mohammed Abdeljalil, Minister of Transport and Logistics for Morocco, and Oscar Puente Santiago, Spanish Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, resulted in the creation of a joint team tasked with developing an action plan focused on common points of interest outlined in the MoU.

The meeting, attended by the Spanish Ambassador to Morocco, Enrique Ojeda, and a high-level Spanish delegation, highlighted the excellence of cooperative ties between the two countries, especially in the sectors of transport and logistics. Discussions centered on enhancing bilateral cooperation in these strategic areas.

In maritime transport, both parties commended progress toward launching a maritime route connecting Tarfaya in Morocco to Puerto del Rosario in the Canary Islands. This initiative is seen as a potential catalyst for tourism and the development of trade between the two nations.

Regarding rail transport, ministers explored ways to increase bilateral cooperation. Spain is considering investment in Morocco’s planned railway projects, with discussions underway for technical exchanges between railway operators in both countries.

In the field of road transport for passengers and goods, the ministers applauded the fruitful and ongoing dialogue of the Joint Morocco-Spain Committee for International Road Transport. Opportunities to strengthen cooperation to meet the crucial needs of professionals in this sector, vital for the transportation of passengers and goods in both countries, were also examined.

Additionally, the meeting addressed preparations for “Marhaba 2024,” underscoring the importance of coordinating efforts to ensure the success of this crucial operation for Moroccans residing abroad. A significant step towards increased collaboration in the transport sector between Morocco and Spain.
