On Friday, September 27, 2024, the Executive Council for Sustainable Urban Transport (CETUD) signed a framework agreement with the International Finance Corporation (IFC), a subsidiary of the World Bank Group, aimed at improving urban mobility in Senegal. The goal of this partnership is to provide a sustainable approach to modernizing urban transport while reducing CO2 emissions and related pollution.
This transport program will focus on collective, active, and multimodal mobility, prioritizing low-carbon urban transport solutions. The objective is to build sustainable and environmentally friendly infrastructure that meets the growing mobility needs of citizens. By supporting public-private partnership (PPP) transport projects, the IFC will contribute to key areas such as identifying mobility needs in targeted areas, regulatory matters, and the financial and technical aspects of the projects. Environmental concerns will also be prioritized, with special attention given to the climate impacts of the proposed solutions.
By emphasizing innovative and eco-friendly transport modes, this program aims to make a significant contribution to the ambition of building more sustainable and livable cities in Senegal. The projects may include dedicated public transport lines, integrating both existing and future infrastructures, such as bus rapid transit systems or other multimodal solutions tailored to local needs. As part of this agreement, the IFC will play a key role in the preparation and implementation of PPP projects. This support will extend from the needs analysis phase to transaction structuring, through to procurement and contract finalization. By focusing on projects that are already well advanced, the IFC will also work to accelerate the development of a portfolio of additional projects.
This cooperation strengthens CETUD’s commitment to transforming the urban transport landscape in Senegal, while aligning the country’s objectives with international standards in sustainability and energy transition.
This partnership thus marks a new era for urban mobility in Senegal, with projects aimed at improving the quality of life for citizens while addressing environmental challenges.
