ALGERIA TO BUILD 1,000 KM RAIL NETWORK TO TRANSPORT IRON ORE

( Ecofin Agency) – The country is seeking to create new rail links to densify its network in order to facilitate freight transport, mass transport, and limit the deterioration of roads.

Algeria plans to build a 1,000 km railway network to facilitate the evacuation of iron ore from its Gâra Djebilet mine, located in the western province of Tindouf, Algeria Presse Service reported. The railroad will link the mine to Bechar, a province in the northwest of the country.

“Technical teams of the National Agency for Studies and Monitoring of the realization of railway investments (ANESRIF) are on the ground for the choice of the route for the realization of this important railway to link the deposit of Gara Djebilet to Bechar,” said APS, reporting statements by Abdelkader Mazar, the central director and head of communication of ANESRIF.

Since the mine began operating in mid-2022, the extracted resources are transported by road, which could lead in the short term to an early deterioration of the road network and affect the mobility and activities of local populations.

If successful, this rail project will allow for a modal transition from road to rail to reduce pressure on the road network that interconnects Tindouf province with other regions of the country.
