India – Bharat Africa Setu: A Strategic Trade Platform Focused on Africa

DP World, a global provider of smart end-to-end supply chain solutions, has launched a strategic trade platform named Bharat Africa Setu under the supervision of India’s Ministry of Commerce & Industry and the Ministry of External Affairs.

Unveiled at the Dubai-India Business Forum in Mumbai by His Excellency Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, Group Chairman and CEO of DP World, this initiative aims to boost trade between India and Africa. Bharat Africa Setu is designed to strengthen India’s current trade footprint in the African market: while Africa imports nearly $430 billion worth of goods annually, India’s share stands at only 6.5%, or $28 billion. The goal is to double that share to 12% by 2030.

Backed by DP World’s robust logistics footprint — reaching over 260,000 retail outlets — the platform will enable:

  • Indian companies to access solid networks for warehousing, trade finance, and distribution
  • The reinforcement of South-South cooperation and inclusive growth
  • Seamless connectivity between India and Africa via maritime and air links connecting ports, economic zones, and logistics parks
  • Direct access to customers in 53 African countries

According to Mr. Piyush Goyal, India’s Minister of Commerce & Industry:
“Africa holds immense promise as a strategic trade partner for India. To fully unlock this potential, we must strengthen connectivity, eliminate trade bottlenecks, and enable Indian businesses to access and thrive in Africa’s dynamic markets.”

Ahmed bin Sulayem highlighted the key role Africa can play in global trade:
“With this initiative, we aim to open up new opportunities for Indian exporters while promoting growth and prosperity on both sides of the Arabian Sea.”

With 10 ports and terminals, 3 economic zones, 203 warehouses spanning over 1.5 million square meters, and deep expertise in freight operations, logistics management, and market access, DP World is offering Indian companies a platform with smart, resilient supply chain solutions — shielding markets from global disruptions while ensuring sustainable growth across Africa.

Bharat Africa Setu aims to create a holistic trade ecosystem built on efficient physical infrastructure and value-added services. India’s offering to African countries will be based on innovative and high-potential concepts. The platform will also help streamline compliance with regulatory procedures, licensing requirements, and government authorizations.
