DRC Rail Freight: Dilolo–Sakania Line Targeted to Industrialize Lobito Corridor
The Democratic Republic of the Congo aims to convert the Lobito Corridor into a leverage point for local industrial transformation, moving beyond its initial function as a mineral export route. Speaking at the Financing Africa’s Future forum in New York, Congolese officials presented a plan focused on upgrading rail freight and integrating local SMEs into the regional supply chain.
The Dilolo–Sakania Axis at the Core of Congolese Rail Freight
DRC Minister of Mines Louis Watum Kabamba urged development financiers—including the Africa Finance Corporation (AFC) and the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (DFC)—to extend funding along the rail network. The core segment relies on the Dilolo–Sakania railway line, stretching over 1,000 km across the copper-rich Lualaba and Haut-Katanga provinces to link mining sites directly to Angola’s Port of Lobito.
Operational Impact on Supply Chain and Mining Logistics
Upgrading this rail segment aims to deliver immediate logistical efficiency:
• Transit Time & Capacity: Faster turnaround times for mineral shipments by bypassing congested road border points toward Eastern and Southern African ports (Dar es Salaam, Durban).
• Cost Optimization: Modal shift of bulk copper and cobalt volumes from road transport to direct rail freight, cutting per-ton logistics costs to the Atlantic.
• Local Value Capture: Integration of Congolese subcontractors into electrical equipment supply, industrial engineering, and equipment maintenance along the rail line.
Why It Matters
• Bottleneck Reduction: Rail modernization decongests cross-border road transport and stabilizes the export supply chain for critical energy transition minerals.
• Logistics Cost Savings: Direct rail connections significantly lower total freight expenses toward Atlantic maritime routes.
• Industrial Anchor: Infrastructure access facilitates local mineral processing units and agricultural trade development along the corridor.
Regional Perspective
The expansion of the Lobito Corridor is shifting logistics routes across Central and Southern Africa. By establishing seamless rail connectivity between the DRC, Zambia, and the Atlantic coast, the region secures a direct trade route to North American and European markets while boosting intra-African trade under the AfCFTA.
The DRC is pushing to transform its heavy rail freight infrastructure into a fully integrated economic corridor. Securing blended finance for the Dilolo–Sakania section will determine whether the country can turn raw mineral transit into long-term domestic industrial growth.
