Urban Mobility in Burkina Faso: 375 New Buses Strengthen Public Transport in Ouagadougou

Burkina Faso is accelerating the modernization of its urban transport system. On January 27, 2026, Prime Minister Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ouédraogo officially handed over a second batch of 375 buses to the Ouagadougou Public Transport Company (SOTRACO).

With this delivery, the total number of newly acquired buses now reaches 530 units under the Presidential Initiative for Quality Education (IPEQ) and the Greater Ouaga Urban Mobility Project (PMUGO). The first batch of 155 buses, delivered last August, marked the launch of a large-scale program to modernize the public transport network.

Beyond fleet renewal, this investment reflects the authorities’ determination to sustainably strengthen road transport in Burkina Faso, providing concrete responses to challenges related to accessibility and service reliability.

The priority given to student mobility highlights the link between education policy and transport in Burkina Faso, while helping to reduce the social costs associated with urban mobility.

At the Ouagadougou level, SOTRACO plays a central role in managing Burkina Faso’s urban supply chain by contributing to better organization of passenger flows and shorter travel times.

By consolidating its fleet and structuring urban mobility, the country is strengthening the foundations of Burkina Faso’s supply chain and creating a more enabling environment for mobility.
