South Africa’s aviation sector has earned global acclaim at the 2025 Skytrax World Airport Awards, held in Madrid, Spain. At the forefront of this achievement is Cape Town International Airport, which was named the Best Airport in Africa a title it has now held for ten consecutive years. In addition, Cape Town also took home awards for being the Cleanest Airport in Africa and for having the Best Airport Staff on the continent.
The recognition didn’t stop there. Durban’s King Shaka International Airport was celebrated as the Best Regional Airport in Africa, while also securing second place for Best Airport Staff. OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg followed closely behind, ranking second for Best Airport in Africa overall. Its Intercontinental Hotel was also honored as the Best Airport Hotel in Africa.
Skytrax World Awards
These accolades are part of the Skytrax Awards, which are regarded as a leading standard of excellence in the global airport industry. Based on a passenger satisfaction survey conducted across 575 airports in 100 countries, the results reflect real traveler experiences from August 2024 to February 2025. The survey covers all aspects of the airport journey, including check-in, terminal cleanliness, security, shopping options, and gate departure.
Mpumi Mpofu, CEO of Airports Company South Africa (ACSA), expressed pride in the honors, stating that the awards validate their ongoing efforts to deliver safe, seamless, and enjoyable travel experiences. She emphasized that these recognitions serve as motivation to continue striving for excellence.
South Africa’s strong presence across multiple award categories illustrates its commitment to high service standards, efficient operations, and traveler satisfaction. These accomplishments are a benchmark for other African airports and show how strategic investment in aviation infrastructure can elevate both passenger experience and global competitiveness.
