CEEAC advances Brazzaville–Kinshasa Road-Rail Bridge Project as Strategic Partner Selection Moves Forward
The long-awaited road-rail bridge linking Brazzaville in the Republic of the Congo and Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has reached a new milestone. Following a joint site visit and technical clarification meetings with five pre-qualified consortia, the Central African Economic Community (ECCAS) has confirmed progress in the procurement process for one of Central Africa’s most strategic transport infrastructure projects.
Site Visit Marks a New Phase in the Procurement Process
The ECCAS Commission, together with the governments of the Republic of the Congo and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, convened the Joint Technical Committee (JTC) from 22 to 25 July 2026 in Kinshasa to advance the procurement process for the Brazzaville–Kinshasa Road-Rail Bridge Project.
The meeting followed the Request for Proposals (RFP) launched on 1 July 2026, which invited five pre-qualified international consortia to participate in a mandatory site visit and technical clarification sessions before submitting their final bids by 1 October 2026.
On 23 July, representatives from ECCAS, both governments and the shortlisted consortia visited the future bridge site to review ongoing preparatory works, examine the alignment of the planned crossing and assess the project’s technical footprint.
Technical Clarifications Ahead of Final Bids
On 24 and 25 July, the Joint Technical Committee held the first clarification meetings with participating consortia.
The sessions provided an opportunity to address the initial technical questions raised by bidders regarding engineering requirements, project scope and procurement procedures. Written responses will be shared with all shortlisted candidates to ensure transparency and equal access to information throughout the tender process.
According to the project authorities, certificates confirming participation in the site visit will be issued to each consortium, allowing them to proceed with the preparation of their final technical and financial proposals.
A Strategic Link for Central African Trade Corridors
The proposed road-rail bridge is expected to become one of the most significant multimodal transport investments in Central Africa.
By creating the first permanent road and rail connection across the Congo River between Kinshasa and Brazzaville, the project aims to facilitate the movement of freight and passengers between the two neighbouring capitals, improve regional connectivity and strengthen trade within the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS).The future crossing is expected to complement existing river transport services while supporting the development of more efficient logistics corridors linking the Atlantic ports of Central Africa with inland markets.
Logistics and Trade Benefits Beyond the Two Capitals
Beyond improving bilateral connectivity, the bridge is expected to enhance regional supply chains by reducing transport times, lowering logistics costs and improving the reliability of cross-border freight operations.
For transport operators and logistics providers, the infrastructure could unlock new multimodal freight opportunities by integrating road, rail and river transport into a more efficient regional network. It is also expected to facilitate customs cooperation and support the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) by improving the physical connectivity required for intra-African trade.The bridge is widely viewed as a strategic missing link in Central Africa’s transport network, with the potential to stimulate investment, industrial development and regional economic integration.
