Transnet SOC Ltd (“Transnet”) announced a significant industrial and economic victory today, November 19, 2025, marking the rollout of the 200th state-of-the-art Traxx 23E locomotive from its assembly line. This pivotal achievement is part of the larger fleet renewal program that will see Transnet procure a total of 240 units.
A Testament to Local Manufacturing and Resilience
The milestone not only represents a numerical target achieved but also underscores the engineering excellence and expertise resident within Transnet Engineering. It signals a resilient recovery for Transnet following previous setbacks, reaffirming its dedication to driving transformation within the logistics sector through robust local manufacturing.
Transnet Group Chief Executive, Michelle Phillips, highlighted the strategic importance of the project. “The Traxx 23E project is the cornerstone of Transnet’s effort to modernise its freight rail fleet,” she stated. “Modernising our fleet is a critical component of the national mandate to lower the cost of doing business and enable economic growth. Today’s celebration of this milestone is a manifestation of our commitment to modernise our fleet and enhance freight capacity through sustained and focused investment in rolling stock assets.”
Aggressive Ramp-Up Drives Record Performance
The accelerated delivery schedule follows a 2023 settlement agreement with project partner Alstom, which acquired the original contractor, Bombardier.
Following the agreement, Transnet Engineering implemented a swift and aggressive ramp-up strategy. This included establishing a 24/5 shift pattern and successfully stabilising the material supply chain. These efforts culminated in a best-ever performance in 2024, with the delivery of 43 locomotives in a single year.
The project is now firmly on track to complete the entire order, with the remaining 40 locomotives scheduled for delivery by June 2026.
Positioning Transnet as a Continental OEM
The successful completion of the 200th Traxx 23E locomotive serves as powerful evidence of Transnet Engineering’s capability, resilience, and central role in South Africa’s economic machinery.
As Transnet Engineering increasingly positions itself to become a leading Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) for the continent, the Traxx 23E fleet renewal project solidifies its status as a critical driver in moving South Africa forward by ensuring a modern, efficient, and locally-supported freight rail network.
