The Mozambique–Italy Business Forum, recently held in Maputo, highlighted agricultural cooperation as the cornerstone of the partnership between the two nations. Italian Minister of Agriculture Francesco Lollobrigida stressed that Italy seeks to establish a model of collaboration based on innovation and shared prosperity, in contrast with past exploitative practices. His approach, which he compared to that of Enrico Mattei, aims at mutual development and the harnessing of each country’s potential.
A vision focused on sovereignty and competitiveness
According to Minister Lollobrigida, Mozambique is a strategic partner for Italy. The objective is not only to strengthen food self-sufficiency, but also to transform production into wealth through exports and quality branding. During a visit to local markets, he was particularly impressed by the quality of Mozambican products, especially fish, fruits, and vegetables.
Investing in women and technology
Italy has committed to investing in the training of Mozambican women entrepreneurs, viewing women as key drivers of economic growth. At the same time, technological cooperation is planned, with the supply of high-quality Italian agricultural machinery that, although more expensive, ensures greater reliability and higher productivity. These initiatives aim to strengthen Mozambican production chains.
Concrete projects for the future
This partnership also extends to the energy sector. It forms part of the Mattei Plan and seeks to combine Mozambique’s agricultural traditions with modern technologies. Mozambican Minister of Agriculture Roberto Albino stated that these initiatives represent around USD 160 million in investments, which are crucial for revitalizing the rural sector. Several agreements have already been signed to bring these projects to fruition and to reinforce food sovereignty and local value creation.
